How to Set up a DVD Player

DVD players are very simple devices that are easy to integrate into your entertainment system. They are packaged with all the necessary connecting cords and require no special tools to install.

  1. First: The DVD box

Included in the box of a new DVD player is a power cord to connect the device to an electrical outlet, and a cord to connect the DVD player to the television. DVD players do not include additional cords for other components, and these other devices are packaged with their own required wiring.

  2. Second: Understanding interface colors

DVD players connect to televisions through a three-pronged interface using three identifying colors: yellow, white and red. For these types of cords, yellow denotes video connectivity, red denotes right channel audio and white denotes left audio channel. In some cords, the white interface for left channel audio is occasionally black in color.

  3. Third: Connecting to a TV

Connect the DVD player to the TV before plugging it into an outlet to prevent accidental shock or equipment damage. These colored cords interface into connections on the back of the DVD player and TV using this same three-color scheme. Once the DVD player is connected to the TV, the final step of the installation process is to plug the player into an outlet.

  4. Fourth: Helpful hints

Modern televisions include three-colored interfaces for a large number of components for easy selection between devices through a simple menu. When installing a DVD player and connecting to a TV, take note of which slot the player uses. By noting which slot is occupied by the DVD player, switching between the player and other devices is very simple. When connecting a DVD player to a system with a cable or satellite box, connect the box to the player and the player to the TV.
