How to Convert a VHS to a DVD

VHS to DVD conversion really is not difficult. Although it is possible to hire a service to do it for you, as long as you have the proper equipment you can do it at home with these step-by-step instructions.

1. First: Install software and updates

   An up-to-date computer is necessary in order to convert VHS to DVD. If you have Windows, go to WindowsUpdate.com and check for any software updates for your computer, especially for your graphics card. Install video editing software, some of which is available for free, and you are ready for the next step.

2. Second: Hook up cable

   First, plug in a video capture card and let your computer recognize it. You may need to restart. Next, plug one end of your RCA video cable into the "output" jacks in your VCR and the other end into the video capture device. Put a VHS tape into the VCR and rewind it fully.

3. Third: Transfer video

   Start up your video editing software. You should find an option labeled "Capture" or something similar. Make sure your settings are set to receive data from the video capture card.
