FAQs About DVDs

DVDs (or digital video discs) have altered digital media immensely since their introduction. Developed in the mid-90s and entering the mainstream a few years later, DVDs destroyed video sales and rentals, making the VCR ancient technology. While you may use these discs often, you may not really know that much about them. Keep reading for more information on DVDs and answers to FAQs about DVDs.

Q: How does a DVD work?
A: Unlike a video tape, which is repeatedly used to record, most DVDs do not allow you to erase or record over information contained on each DVD. Manufacturers stamp information on them, creating a permanent image. Using a laser light, a DVD player reads this stamp, which has far more data-storage capabilities than video cassettes. Also, unlike a videotape, a DVD's country of origin makes a difference in the video presentation. Not all DVD players and DVDs are compatible.
Q: What kinds of DVDs exist?
A: You can find many types of DVDs. For computer use, DVDs come in either reading formats or read/write formats. The latter allows erasing and recording over data; although, they cost far more. For larger data storage, dual-layer DVDs allow the storage of twice the amount of material. These dual-layer DVDs also live in the visual media market as well.
Q: Is DVD the most popular format?
A: Yes, for now. Many believe DVDs are likely to only enjoy a relatively short period of time as the most popular storage medium. Blue-ray DVDs, which essentially just hold more data, feature even better quality and storage, but both are likely to eventually have replacements with digital media technology. Critics believe that as soon as video streaming is perfected, the use of DVDs is likely to come to an end.
